Privacy policy
Plain English: what this site collects, why, and how to switch it off.
This site is a set of articles. It has no accounts, no logins, and no upload feature — we never receive the PDFs or spreadsheets you are working on. What follows covers the small amount of information a visit does generate.
What we collect
We do not ask you for personal information, and there is no form on this site that collects it. We collect no names, no postal addresses, and no payment details, because there is nothing here to buy.
If you email us at [email protected], we receive your email address and whatever you choose to put in the message. We use that only to reply to you and to fix whatever you told us about.
Analytics
We use a third-party web analytics service to understand which pages are read and how people arrive at them. It records things like the page visited, the referring site, approximate location derived from your IP address, and general device and browser type. We look at this in aggregate to decide what to write next; we do not use it to identify individual visitors, and we do not sell or share it.
Analytics providers set their own cookies and are governed by their own privacy policies. If you would rather not be measured at all, browser-level tracking protection, an ad or script blocker, or your browser's "Do Not Track" setting will all prevent the analytics script from loading.
Cookies
Cookies are small files a site stores in your browser. This site uses them in two ways:
- Preference: when you dismiss the cookie notice, we store a single flag in your browser so the notice stays dismissed. It contains no personal information.
- Analytics: the analytics service described above sets cookies to tell repeat visits apart from new ones.
- Affiliate tracking: if you click an outbound affiliate link, the destination site may set a cookie recording that you arrived from here, so any resulting commission is attributed correctly.
You can delete or block cookies at any time in your browser settings. Nothing on this site stops working if you do.
Affiliate links
Some outbound links are affiliate links, as explained on our about page. When you follow one, the vendor knows the visit came from this site and may set its own cookies. We do not receive your personal details from those vendors — only aggregate reporting about referrals. Once you leave this site, the destination's privacy policy governs your data, not ours.
Third-party services
This site is served through standard web hosting and content-delivery infrastructure, which keeps short-lived server logs containing IP addresses and request details for security and reliability purposes. We do not use those logs to build profiles of visitors.
Children
This site is aimed at people doing office and finance work. It is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
Your choices
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask what information relates to you, to request its deletion, or to object to its processing. Because we hold almost nothing — analytics data we cannot tie to a person, plus any email you have sent us — the practical answer is usually short, but write to [email protected] and we will handle the request.
Changes to this policy
If our analytics setup or use of affiliate links changes, this page changes with it. Continuing to use the site after an update means you accept the revised policy, so it is worth a look if you care about the details.
